ADBA Policy & Market Report | October 2024

This has been an eventful year. We have a new Government, and we have also had a lot of activity at official level: consultations on policy changes concerning the AD sector. We have seen the large and very wide-reaching consultation on the future of biomethane support from DESNZ and two separate consultations on the carbon trading scheme developments from the same department. All of that came even before we had the seismic shift in the make-up of parliament at the election in July.

The expansion in number and capacity of biomethane plants continues. At the current pace, biomethane plants alone would reach 17TWh in 2030. That is half of the 2050 estimate published in the Government’s 2023 biomass strategy and is clear evidence that we have the potential to move the needle on the removal of fossil carbon from the UK energy sector.

As we head towards 2025, we have a forthcoming budget and a new spending review period in government. This presents risks and opportunities for the sector, but ADBA will continue to make a strong case for the sector to get the support and recognition that it deserves.

To help our members understand the landscape, we present the end of year Policy and Market report.
