On 20 November 2024, ADBA submitted a response to the UK government’s Invest 2035 Modern Industrial Strategy consultation, emphasising the important role AD must play in Britain’s sustainable industrial future.

Our response highlights how AD technology already delivers significant benefits to the UK economy and environment. The industry currently achieves a 1% reduction in UK greenhouse gas emissions, processing 36 million tonnes of organic waste annually. With 756 operational facilities and potential for many new plants by 2030, the sector generates 21 TWh of biogas yearly which is enough to heat 6.8 million UK homes.

We highlighted several barriers that need addressing for the industry to reach its full potential. The UK Emissions Trading Scheme unfairly penalises biomethane by treating it like fossil gas. Delays in mandatory food waste collections hinder feedstock access, whilst planning processes need streamlining. Long-term policy certainty beyond the Green Gas Support Scheme is essential for investor confidence.

Drawing from successful European models in Italy, Germany and Sweden, we’ve outlined how the UK can better support AD development through integrated agricultural partnerships, large-scale production systems and transport-focused deployment. We’ve also emphasised the need for targeted training programmes and knowledge-sharing networks to build sector expertise.

ADBA strongly advocates for AD and biomethane production to be recognised as a critical subsector for the zero-carbon economy. With proper policy support, our industry can deliver on multiple strategic objectives ranging from rural development to waste management and decarbonisation.
