Biogen welcomed European delegations to their Bygrave AD Facility in Hertfordshire on 10th December 2024. The visit included representatives from European Union officials and UK government officials from DEFRA.
The Bygrave facility operates as a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) site that processes food waste through AD. Located near Baldock, the site demonstrates practical applications of AD technology in waste management and renewable energy generation.
The European delegations represented different countries and organisations, bringing together representatives from EU member states, European Union officials, and UK government officials from Defra. The attendees included environmental counsellors, agricultural attachés, and economic advisers. The groups toured the operational areas of the facility, observing the food waste processing through the AD system.
During the site visit, the delegations observed the comprehensive operations of the facility, including the full food waste processing system, CHP operations, digestate handling procedures, and overall site management and compliance measures.
Following the tour, we joined Biogen in delivering presentations to the delegations. The discussion covered several key areas within the sector, including current developments, primary barriers facing the industry, operational challenges, and regulatory requirements.
This visit provided a practical look at how AD technology is being used in the UK. The attendance of European delegations shows the wider interest in AD technology for waste management and renewable energy production.
